Gem Talk - Colour
Colour is one of the 4 famous “C”s when purchasing gemstones. It is the most visual factor when evaluating colored gems. Generally, the more attractive a gem’s color, the higher the value. Bright, rich and intense colors are valued over those that are dark or light. Although specific color hues can affect the value of gems, personal preferences are also very important. The colors seen should ideally remain attractive regardless of light conditions. Whether viewed indoors, outdoors, by day or by night, a gem should always remain vibrant and beautiful. When you look in to the stone it should mesmerize you and definitely “talk to you”. The mixing of color hues into combinations, such as purple-red in Amethyst and bright blue-green in Apatite is attractive and value enhancing. Many gems also have specific expressions to denote the very top colors found within a species. For example, “Pigeon Red” used for Ruby and “Cornflower Blue” for Sapphire. Such terms are equable with the most desirable colors to be found within a gem species. The colour of a gem depends largely on the way it absorbs light. White light is made up of rainbow – spectral colours. When it strikes the gemstone some spectral colours are “preferentially absorbed”. The wavelengths that are not absorbed pass through or reflect back, depending on the, cut, number of facets, clarity of the stone, etc. This light that is not absorbed gives the gem its colour. Each gemstone has a unique colour fingerprint also known as the absorption spectrum. To measure the absorption spectrum a Spectroscope is used. To the naked eye many gemstones look the same colour. Colour of gemstones depends on the crystalline structure and the amount of trace elements, impurities, in the “alochromatic” gems , or the “idiochromatic” gems, the ones that the colour is composed from the elements that are the essential part of the gems chemical composition. Whichever way you look at it a good quality gemstone is beautiful, and will leave you speechless with it’s mystique and hypnotic effect.
