Gem Talk - Carat Weight
Carat is one of the 4 famous “C”s when purchasing gemstones, especially diamonds. The use of Carat as the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) and IGA (International Gem Association) standard for weight of gemstones originates from the traditional use of carob seeds to weigh gems, mostly due to their consistent size and shape. One carat is the equivalent of 0.20 grams. Smaller gemstones are divided into 100 smaller units known as points. The term carats (Cts) is not the same as “karats” (K). Karat is a measurement of gold purity relative to the amount of alloys being added incorporated in overall composition. An 18K gold, for example, is 18 divided by 24 (24K is pure Gold) producing 75% Gold alloy. They both originate from the use of carob seeds, which in this case was used to weight the alloys added to gold. As the weight of a gem increases, so does its price per carat. Large gems are always rarer than smaller ones, so price per carat rises exceptionally. For example, a 5 carat Diamond is worth far more than five 1 carat Diamonds of the same quality. Gemstone prices increase significantly when in excess of certain key weights. For example, a 2.01 carat Emerald has a higher price tag than 1.99 carats, even though the physical difference is minute.
